APC has completed 4 projects for the Maritime Aquarium over the past 7 years.
Project Description:
- Full design-build project for a new 3,000-square-foot seabird exhibit, encompassing design and construction of all trades, finishes, and specialized exhibit systems. Built within a fully operational, year-round aquarium, the habitat replicates the rugged coastal landscapes of the North Atlantic for Atlantic puffins and common murres.
- The exhibit centers on a 5,200-gallon saltwater habitat with custom rockwork, specialized life support systems, and a deep-water environment supporting natural diving, swimming & colony behaviors.
- Constructed above- and below-waterline viewing areas to provide multiple vantage points of the habitat, home to Connecticut’s only puffin colony.
- The scope included integrated audio, interpretive graphics, and themed environmental elements throughout the exhibit space.
- A single-source design-build delivery carried the project from P&Z approval through final sign-off. Design-build services included: design management and coordination across all trades and finishes, specialty contractor coordination for exhibit theming and life support systems, coordination with the adjacent Walk Bridge project team for site access, early-release procurement for HVAC and FRP structural elements, weekly stakeholder meetings with executive leadership, facilities, husbandry, and life support staff, scheduling, and construction.
- Construction Management services included: budgeting, value engineering, constructability reviews, logistical and safety planning, scheduling, mock-up facilitation, material procurement, subcontractor bid & award, and construction.
