Project Description:

  • Construction of a new four story LEED Gold certified library in Darien, Connecticut.
  • This 54,000 square foot building consists of a poured in place concrete foundation, structural steel frame with concrete deck, brick veneer facing with masonry backing and slate roof.
  • The exterior features brick veneer accented by a glass curtain wall at the main entrance.
  • The library features a computerized book return conveyor system, the first of its kind to be designed and installed in the state.
  • There is an on site water retention system and geothermal heating, ventilating and air conditioning system that uses closed loop technology.
  • The new radio frequency identification system eliminates the need for a centralized circulation desk. Patrons can scan check out their books at a kiosk complete with card reader and book scanner. This state-of-the-art system allows the library staff to operate more efficiently and provide better services to the patrons.
  • On the main level, the Community Room accommodates 171 patrons where they can enjoy lectures, movies, music or other community-based events. Additionally, non-profits and other agencies may utilize the 124 inch projection screen in the main conference room.
  • Because of the targeted LEED Gold rating, sustainable construction practices and documentation of these practices have been used throughout.
  • All lumber, including material for roof shingles, beams, studs, flooring and millwork has been acquired from companies using sustainable forestry practices.
  • Construction management services included: constructability review, budgeting, value engineering, subcontractor bid and award, pre-purchase program, scheduling and construction, documentation of sustainability construction activities for LEED Gold certification.
